Navigating the Early Weeks: A Guide to Newborn Sleep

When I embarked on my journey to become a sleep consultant, it wasn’t a decision I made lightly. With years of experience in the children’s sector and a passion for supporting families, I needed to find a programme that supported my values and expertise. After researching various sleep consultant companies, I found my alignment with Little Dreams Consulting. Their evidence-based approach, which has consistently proven effective, was exactly what I was looking for.

One aspect of the Little Dreams programme that immediately appealed to me was their opinion about working with newborns. While we offer a comprehensive antenatal package, we don’t engage in sleep coaching for the first four months. Instead, we focus on providing invaluable advice to help new parents navigate the early stages of parenting and sleep. It’s not about routines at this stage, but about setting up good habits that will benefit both the parents and baby.

Understanding Newborn Sleep

Newborns have unique sleep patterns that can be quite different from older infants and toddlers. For the first 0-12 weeks, newborns typically sleep for about 6-8 hours during the day and 8 hours at night. Their sleep is split evenly between deep sleep and REM (dream) sleep, with each playing a crucial role in their development. Deep sleep is essential for physical growth, while REM sleep helps them process and make sense of their new world.

During the first six weeks, babies can only stay awake for about 45-60 minutes before needing to sleep again. This short wakeful period can make it challenging to establish any sort of routine, but it’s essential to remember that this is perfectly normal.

Key Goals for the First Six Weeks

While it might feel overwhelming to add anything more to your plate during these early weeks, there are a few gentle goals you can aim for:

  1. Rest and Recover: Your primary focus during the first six weeks should be on rest and recovery. This is a significant period of adjustment, and it’s crucial to be kind to yourself as you navigate this new chapter.
  1. Teach Day and Night Differences: One simple goal is to help your little one learn the difference between night and day. Keep nighttime dark and quiet and make daytime brighter and more interactive. Even something as simple as turning on the television or radio for background noise can help create this distinction.
  1. Keep Wake Times Short: Remember that your baby will need to sleep again after 45-60 minutes of being awake. Keeping this in mind can help you anticipate their needs and avoid overtiredness.

Final Thoughts

The first six weeks with your newborn can be a whirlwind of emotions and adjustments. Remember to be gentle with yourself and to lean on the support of your family and friends. This is a time for recovery, bonding, and slowly finding your new rhythm as a family. At Little Dreams, we’re here to support you every step of the way, providing guidance and reassurance as you navigate the early stages of parenting. Enjoy these precious moments and know that you’re doing an incredible job.
